I've taught this to ... By: Highmtn52. on 18 Feb 10, 16:30:08 I've taught this to pups in my "fenced" back yard with no leash on. You have to follow the dog around the yard chanting the buzz word or command. Or course you're ALWAYS going to have your dog leashed when out of your yard (and in training). Also... (sounds gross but..) I stack a little poop in one area of the yard when training a pup for this. I take the pup to that area and it helps a dog to THINK ABOUT GOING when they smell pheromones from the feces already there. Very nifty!

I'm a pretty ... By: CapstoneRetrievers1. on 04 Jul 09, 17:30:35 I'm a pretty successful retriever trainer, so I must be doing something right. NOBODY worth a heck uses a e-collar to teach the heel command. I use a collar and a 6 foot leash to teach heel and there's no e-collar pressure or any other kind of pressure, but there's no food reward either. At the end of the training session the retrievers get to retrieve a bumper or a duck dummy...that's the reward.
No disrespect ... By: eletendre1. on 04 Jul 09, 12:07:19 No disrespect intended but you really, really don't know what you're talking about. Behavior is all about consequences. You go to work every week because you get a paycheck. When you're training your retrievers you are applying some type of consequence. The dog is either working to get something (treat) or working to avoid something (stimulation from an electronic collar). It's that simple.
No disrespect ... By: CapstoneRetrievers1. on 04 Jul 09, 05:05:41 No disrespect intended, but food rewards is wrong. Then you don't train the dog to listen to the command you teach the dog food food food. And you teach the dog listen to the command and you get food not listen to the command because I'm the pack leader.

A service animal must have the capability of "intelligent disobedience." This means that even if I am not aware of my own need, usually medical, my service dog is able to discern this, recognizing the potential that my safety and welfare are at risk, and his "disobedience" is deliberate. (see part 4)
(Part 4) However, ... By: americassweetie1. on 15 Jan 10, 20:03:44 (Part 4) However, companion dogs are reliant on the training, and the willing cooperation, of their owner because they may not have the capacity to learn discernment on their own. In summary and in each case, keep in mind - YOU are being trained to train your pet.

By: Krispyb84. on 05 Jan 10, 17:20:57 Yeahhh I keep hearing that she'll "calm down" in a few months - I went out and bought a nylon harness and she seems to have calmed down with it on - I would love to teach her to heel but it is so hard to get the attention!! By: HappyHag. on 30 Dec 09, 18:41:12 I wonder if there's an age when these things begin to work? ie maybe it's too much to expect a pup to walk to heel all the time in the street? I'm hoping if I keep doing 'heel' for a couple of yards in between the mad dashing and stubborn sitting, the pup will get the habit eventually. I do 'heel' with treat in hand and he has to follow the hand.

IT WORKED! My 13 ... By: kathyn1000. on 15 Dec 09, 01:21:29 IT WORKED! My 13 mo rottweiler was a rescue dog & didn't have any training. Pulled constantly. In < 5 min, she followed me instead of pulling me. When there was a distraction, I quickly turned & walked away. She "snapped" herself quite a few times but she stopped pulling. If I shorten the leash, she stays close; if I let it out, she may go to the end but will not pull. Wish I had it on video to show it works for big, untrained dogs!

It's good that you're working on it. It can be really frusterating. The first couple walks it took me like 10 minutes to travel 1/2 a block. Sounds like your dog just needs reminders here and there. But try to use a WORD to remind him, instead of a tug. If you have to tug, you should STOP also...so he learns that he wont get anywhere unless YOU are leader. I have ZERO tolerance with my puppy, so that he doesn't get confused. It's work in progress tho!

I like the approach, seems to be based on us as humans using our greater level of intelligence to understand the dog (behaviors/drives/instincts) and be responsible for communicating the right messages (by using that knowledge), and practicing until the dog understands too. Easy in theory. Practice makes perfect, for man and dog.

For example, I love the advice not to use the harsh tone or potentially threatening body posture for recalls, but I'd love to see the research that supports the trio of drives you're using as the foundation for this advice.

A few potential ... By: GUMMYBEAYUH. on 29 May 09, 05:16:40 A few potential Defensive Drive commands I can foresee being necessary are: Heel, Sit, Down, Quiet, Let Go, Drop It, etc. You should obviously do all of these first in Prey Drive, and only when that has been mastered, THEN work on Defensive drive. You should work with a knowledgeable trainer in order to do this however, as Defensive Drive work, especially when done wrong, can cause your dog to lose trust in you. Prey drive work is fun for a dog, whereas Defensive drive work is emotionally rough.

Your puppy will continue to cry for most of her crating time (Especially at night when she doesn't notice any human activity),for most likely no more than One Week. This is perfectly normal,& it is the result of nothing more than her being homesick due to having just separated from her littermates. Every Puppy I've had has gone through the same process, just like Baby children!

A dog's nose is millions of times greater than a human's and as such a dog can detect the changes in human emotion. All studied and documented numerous times at various levels of University education. Check out the web for more. Hope this answers your question. Good talking to you.

Also, yes your ... By: nightvisionmonocular. on 05 Feb 10, 03:47:50 Also, yes your scent changes at a level humans are not able to detect. Ever wonder why a dog knows you're afraid of him? Now imagine you're aggressive, or hiding, or afraid. Most criminals are all of these emotions and then some. This makes you an easy target for the dog and also a serious threat. The dog can read this and will react in a nasty manner. The dog also knows the handler has his back and will assist in the apprehension. Hence the term 'K-9 Team'.

Unfortunately my dog is now wise to this trick and now flat out refuses to drop the ball unless something distracts his attention and he runs off to sniff... leaving his ball THERE for me to collect. We've spent up to 15 minutes just staring in the park and I'm now losing patience. I spent 10 minutes yesterday trying to get him to drop. A stranger walks up, asks him to drop and he does immediately... 3 times... I'm starting to think this is personal :)

You could build ... By: kikopup. on 05 Jun 09, 21:00:52 You could build calmness to the degree that you want. I for example, have dogs that are calm enough around food, so I can work on complex tricks without them just staring at the food, or spinning and jumping. But not too calm that they are not motivated enough to do high energy tricks. I actually myself will do exercises to build arousal on food with my dogs. There are owners who will want to build calmness and others who will want to build arousal... depending on how the dog is at this point
If you think in ... By: kikopup. on 05 Jun 09, 20:56:38 If you think in terms of reinforcement... behaviors that are reinforced increase, so a 'hyper active' dog might not actually genetically be 'hyper active', the owner just kept reinforcing the dog and increasing the dogs likeliness to be more and more hyper, the dog is not consciously choosing to be that way, neuron connections have been formed in the dogs brain from behaviors the owner 'chose' to reinforce.

Everybody who knows ... By: bjornar83. on 02 May 09, 02:55:33 Everybody who knows dog psychology says that excitement is negative for the dog. But as you say, for us it seems like the dog is really happy when it's jumping around like crazy.
What is it that makes excitement negative for a dog? What if the dog is wagging it's tail when he sees that you prepare food, or if it sits down looking really concentrated at you when you do it? Is this considered some kind of stress for the dog? Should a dog always be totally calm to be happy?

Anyways, I got him to eat (and calmly) by fixing up the bowl for him and then instead of putting it down, holding it in a corner so he can't see what I'm doing...He calms down, I put it down and he appreciates the meal and eats.

www.ted.com Speaking at the 2007 EG conference, trainer Ian Dunbar asks us to see the world through the eyes of our beloved dogs. By knowing our pets' perspective, we can build their love and trust. It's a message that resonates well beyond the animal world.
That is good news. ... By: cschaffh. on 10 Feb 10, 17:20:51 That is good news. After all how many times can I ask for actual citations so we can discuss actual data and the overstated conclusions many people have perpetuated. So in others words you can believe in the middle ground of agreeing about exercise (perhaps even of not rewarding unwanted behavior) but you won't agree to anything else. That's OK. It is actually in the middle. You ignore that observing the results of Cesar's training activities is evidence. By definition. It was fun. Bye.
Good news cschaffh: ... By: keeg021985. on 10 Feb 10, 00:45:32 Good news cschaffh: A favor to the readers: I will terminate this lame back and forth commenting we are engaged in. You remind me of a high school friend who told me he believed that one can be a scientist and still have a belief in a sky god or other things for which there is no evidence. Nope --- the two are singularly contradictory. No true scientist can believe in a sky god or any other supernatural force, just as one can't know the science of dog learning and still value Milan.
I emplore you to ... By: keeg021985. on 10 Feb 10, 00:16:27 I emplore you to actually read what you write before clicking the 'post comment' button. Your sentences are filled mostly with inane ideas that you try to make relevant to some point that only you are aware of. Cesar Milan has NO training, education, or credentials in behavioral science or animal ethology, and knows no more about dogs than the cadre of 'traditional' trainers that have been pushing the same tired old methods since 1953. Cesar has only made dogs' lives harder by perpetuating myths
Yes, I do admit ... By: keeg021985. on 10 Feb 10, 00:09:33 Yes, I do admit that the concept of 'calm assertive' is foreign to me, but that's because no one, including Cesar (and he's been challenged to do this) can define it or assert the criteria that chracterize it. Cesar adheres to 'dominance theory,' which is too complicated for him to actually understand, and he also believes that dogs are pack animals, which they're not, and he believes in an erroneous concept referred to as an 'alpha dog,' which doesn't exist.
Cesar has only one ... By: keeg021985. on 10 Feb 10, 00:04:57 Cesar has only one valuable lesson: provide as much exercise to your dog as the dog can tolerate. The rest of his chant is junk. I never asserted a 'premise' or 'hypothesis.' Using words like that does not confer credibility to your comments.
So, credentials ... By: keeg021985. on 10 Feb 10, 00:01:37 So, credentials mean very little, eh? I've been told that a few times in my life, but only by people who didn't have any credentials. Am I surprised?
You disclosed your ... By: keeg021985. on 10 Feb 10, 00:00:10 You disclosed your thinking when you stated you stood in the 'middle ground' between science and the junk of Milan --- it was then that I concluded your comments were worthless.
Science is not a ... By: cschaffh. on 09 Feb 10, 16:44:32 Science is not a vague reference to a single article with limited relevance to your hypothesis. Your hypothesis is clear: Science shows that everything Cesar teaches is wrong. aka "nothing to offer", zero. I have already shown your premise false, so spending the next 7 years searching for data showing everything he says is false will be waste of time. Remember, I only criticized Dunbar's tone of voice. Dunbar and Cesar may both be wrong at times. My argument is that you definitely are.
I'm still bothered ... By: cschaffh. on 09 Feb 10, 16:36:04 I'm still bothered by this. keeg, you actually admit that you don't know what the hell Cesar means when he teaches his theories. Calm assertive body language is a cornerstone of his method. How can you criticize something you don't understand and call it science? It is actually bias. In more rigorous fields, scientists will insist important experimental results are repeated and confirmed independently before fully accepting them. This is science.
I agree very few ... By: cschaffh. on 09 Feb 10, 01:28:58 I agree very few uniformed dog owners will use effective techniques to change a dog's behavior, particularly aggression. I have spoken with several trainers who say only R+ should be used. At least you have started using comments like "almost", rather than your previous knee jerk absolutist statements of before. It is concerning you did not bother to inform yourself what specific techniques I was for or against before your rant. Enjoy your career, I will enjoy my objective unbiased thinking.
Unfortunately, ... By: cschaffh. on 09 Feb 10, 01:19:00 Unfortunately, credentials mean very little. 7 years of biased thinking is still biased thinking. Often times people use metaphors to explain concepts, I apologize if this was overly sophisticated. It was to point out that the study by design documented the results of uninformed dog owners. You (and others) choose to take the results to support unsubstantiated blanket statements. I am still interested in any additional relevant research, if you have any to provide.
What is ... By: keeg021985. on 08 Feb 10, 23:11:06 What is hypothetical research? I have never heard of such a thing. Also, the example of the 'hypothetical research' you give is out of left field and doesn't relate whatsoever to using R+ methods to train dogs. Also, what the hell is 'calm, assertive' mean? Try getting away from the Cesar videos and go study animal ethology for 6-7 years, then come back and we can talk further.
To continue: Very ... By: keeg021985. on 08 Feb 10, 23:07:39 To continue: Very few owners have the formal training and knowledge to use desensitivity and counter-conditioning methods to help a truly aggressive dog. What are you talking about? Who advises to reward a dog for aggressive behavior?
You either don't ... By: keeg021985. on 08 Feb 10, 23:05:45 You either don't comprehend the studies, have been reading garbage, or sinply chose to make things up as you go along (just like Milan). Confrontational methods 'can create agression of used incorrectly'? Confrontational methods are almost always incorrect in their use and almost always cause an increase in reactivity. Also, where did you read that R+ training with rewards is used to calm aggression? True aggression can never be cured by R+ training alone.
Here is new ... By: cschaffh. on 08 Feb 10, 06:18:36 Here is new hypothetical research: A sample of 140 humans were observed in their homes as someone entered the house and instructed them to hand over their wallets. 25% resisted and showed aggression. Clear proof to use positive methods? What if 25% were approached by someone wearing a ski mask and the rest were approached by police officers. The data does not show (nor did it test) that calm assertive (correct) use of the techniques will not work.
Actually, I know ... By: cschaffh. on 08 Feb 10, 06:12:44 Actually, I know which one you refer to, it seems to be the default counterargument, despite clear faults in drawing parallels to Cesar's techniques. It does in fact demonstrate that confrontational methods can create aggression if used incorrectly. Unfortunately, this is also true of positive methods, as owners will attest when they have tried to calm aggression by rewarding them. This is the only legitimate conclusion allowed by the data of the study.

Do you agree is it important to exercise your dog's mind and body?
Do you agree that you should not reinforce unwanted behavior with attention or praise?
If you answer yes, then you are contradicting yourself that Cesar has nothing to offer. To answer your question, I mean dogs who have not been raised with Dr. Dunbar's methods and have grown to be reactive and aggressive generally. Please list more specific info on the U Penn study. Authors?
In addition, I have ... By: keeg021985. on 08 Feb 10, 04:40:39 In addition, I have no idea what you mean by 'aggressive dogs who will bite humans,' since any dog, given sufficient reason (in the dog's mind) will bite a human. Several studies over the past 10 years (check out the most well known one by the Univ of Pennsylvania) have provided clear evidence that highly reactive dogs, as well as those who have a history of frequent, unprovoked aggression, can be helped only through R+ methods with concurrent counter-conditioning.
There is no middle ... By: keeg021985. on 08 Feb 10, 04:28:55 There is no middle ground between science and non-science, thus no middle ground between Dunbar and Milann. That assertion by you assumes that they both have something to offer, but Milan doesn't. His methods are not new and are based on erroneous conclusions drawn from artificially constructed wolf packs in the 1940s and 1950s. You can find links to many papers on canine ethology on the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) site. By the way, I hold an MS in Animal Ethology.
keeg021985, I look ... By: cschaffh. on 08 Feb 10, 03:02:18 keeg021985, I look forward to discussing specifics of science of dog learning with you. Please provide the citations of peer reviewed articles that conclusively demonstrate that a "middle ground" in fact does not exist in dog training. Also please only list those that specifically deal with aggressive dogs who will bite humans. SInce you assume incorrectly that I did not listen to the talk, you are already starting off wrong. Let's hear what you know about the science.
You obviously did ... By: keeg021985. on 07 Feb 10, 22:30:14 You obviously did not actually LISTEN to his talk. Also, there is no 'middle ground' in dog training: There is that which is based on the science of animal learning (Dunbar) and that which is based on the same old school methods used since the 1950s and based on erroneous suppositions (Milan).

I am in the middle ... By: cschaffh. on 11 Jan 10, 16:19:06 I am in the middle ground camp between Dunbar and Cesar. What strikes me about this talk is his disdain for dog owners (and people in general). He is so abrasive he is "punishing" the audience for listening, and then he wonders why people stop listening. There is a better way to tell people they are wrong. I disagree that a dog (like mine) would rather die than feel momentary discomfort, but agree that as soon as the dog reduces aggression you should switch to PR and simply saying No.

And since they will not ever speak English we need to learn their language in order to teach them ours. That is my favorite part of training: the communication.

I've taught this to pups in my "fenced" back yard with no leash on. Very nifty!
By: Highmtn52. on 18 Feb 10, 16:23:19
This guy is right on. I learned this tip years ago and I tell ya...when traveling with dogs it's so nice to hop them out of the car - tell them your command (our phrase is a quickly spoken whisper of -potty!potty! ) and no joke...they "stop...drop...an go".

Hello. I have a male Shih-tzu and he simply won't pee or poo anywhere inside our property. We have to walk him out 3 times a day, no matter what the weather is like. If we dont walk outside, he won't do it. Do you have any idea of how to get him to do his stuff in the backyard? Thanks...
