But for some reason he hates, would growl/or sometime try to bite this old man on my street. I found out that Happy doesn't like people wearing a cap, with a hunchback...and the old man got both of that. Then again..my dog for some reason just doesn't like my aunt and her family. He barks and growls at them...I assume because they own two female dogs. Happy usually doesn't bark or growl at all. Confusing!!

The dog starts to associate something in their environment with the pinch from the prong or choking from the choke chain. It could be anything. Say you're walking past a couple of trees and your dog pulls really hard and gets pinched. He could associate the pinch with the trees. The area the trees are in. The squirrel that was in the tree. This is what you should be careful of.

By: pjwithbread8. on 26 Oct 09, 19:27:18 so so true, i have a doberman puppy and I'm starting to have that problem :/ I've been trying to correct it with treats, when i get her attention back to walking, she gets a treat. of course unless i let her go do whatever she wanted to do. although that seems not be so effective cause even if she knows what the click is and does (I've trained her about 4 commands with the clicker) she seems not to want to stop for the treat :/ plus i cant get her to stop getting scared as i walk her, any tips?

Jynx: Glad you use ... By: voicmjones. on 08 Nov 09, 18:03:41 Jynx: Glad you use your prong collar right. I have seen owners who yank their dog with this collar on and the dog cries out in pain. It was very upsetting to see. I think the problem with the negative collars is that the people who use them have no idea when and how to use them.

One of my weims ... By: Jynxling. on 26 Oct 09, 09:51:42 One of my weims walks with the prong collar. I do not use it in any other training time/on the other dogs. If I accidentally brush the prong collar when cleaning and he hears it rattle, he comes tearing into the room, tail wagging and super excited. The prong collar, to him, has only ever meant a gentle correction and a happy, enjoyable time at the park.
Granted, I would never condone using a choke chain or electric collar. But I don't think the prong collar is a flat negative training tool.

My Personal ... By: kaotic137. on 24 Oct 09, 04:28:17 My Personal favorite of all these collars is the gentle leader head collar or Halti. They are easy to use, the dog doesnt pull and it does not cause discomfort as much as a choke or prong collar does. My dog fought the halti at first but now its a dream!
they do have ... By: Darthbelal. on 22 Oct 09, 18:10:29 they do have anti-pull harnesses that would do well for a pug. The harness doesn't hurt the dog, it just makes him uncomfortable to pull. The idea is to get the dog to pay attention to you while walking, if he starts to walk ahead, turn and go in the opposite direction, sooner or later he's going to start looking at you when walking, praise the dog when he does that. Ignore the dog when he gets ahead, just go in the opposite direction and praise when he corrects himself.
I am a fan of the ... By: AndSoShePaints. on 22 Oct 09, 06:26:12 I am a fan of the gentle leader collar, and have used it with my Staffordshire Bull Terrier with much success. However, I now have a pug, who we adopted as an adult and has issues with walks that would likely be corrected with the use of the same, unfortunately it's impossible... for obvious reasons... lol
Any suggestions on an alternative to the gentle leader that would work with the pugs physiology? We presently walk him with a regular halter.
I use this collar ... By: KJGould. on 21 Oct 09, 22:03:29 I use this collar and it really helps my dog to stop pulling. Except my collar is called a Halti, which I think is just a brand from Germany.
However, unlike other collars it does seem to bother her wearing it but just as an irriation. She often tries to dive to the ground and rub her face to try and get it off.
Also it the part that goes over her nose can push up underneath the eyes if she pulls which can make her squint.
What about pinch collars? Are they the same as prong?

Ok.. to people who ... By: bretddog. on 21 Aug 09, 17:09:05 Ok.. to people who have a dog who pull, and those who have a dog who doesn't move... If dog doesn't move, bring some snack you know it likes. Nose is the strongest sense of the dog. That should make it move. If the dog pulls, you stop, and make him sit. Start again, if it pulls, stop again. If you get only 10m in 30m, then thats ok. Your dog will learn that pulling does not get him anywhere. That is the point..

After a while the treats should only be random, though, so you can train a series of commands and say "good" or click in-between without stopping for a treat every time, and the dog will still listen and won't be so disappointed even when you don't have treats.

By: Namingway00. on 17 May 09, 13:40:36 pick her up while she's peeing inside and take her outside to where she's allowed to pee. dont punish her because she'll get afraid of urinating when you are around, even outside. when you take her outside and she urinates on the right spot, tell her she did a good job and give her a treat.
hope that will help

The only time I ever really put her in their to go, though, was when it was really cold outside. Chihuahuas hate the cold (good thing I'm in TX lol). Poor Pebbles would just stand their and shakes (doggie sweater or not) last year when it was cold. Now she runs for it, does her business and runs back to the door. ha!

By: sweet158. on 07 Apr 09, 19:50:57 i think it makes a big difference in housebreaking because when i let my male dog go outside to pee, he used to pee little bits here and there, marking the areas. After he got neutered, the very first day till now, he would pee in on one spot for a long time until hes all done. Other than that his personalities still the same. Still the same hyper, very social playful dog he is.

never punch it or throw it around and NEVER rub its nose in its mess.
get a soda can and throw some pennies in it and duck tape it closed and shake it when its in the middle of going potty to let it know that your serious.

It makes total ... By: Fsquaredmedia. on 07 May 09, 08:55:39 It makes total sense. If you punish a dog for not following command, the dog will associate the punishment with the command. However, dogs really don't have the mind of a human, so they can't fully understand. It's all in the training. How you train your dog determines the dogs behavior. Very vague, but you have to be careful and be systematic with the dog. It really depends on the person. Meaning Maturity or maybe more.
I think a Chow Chow ... By: DogsAreMyBestFriends. on 02 Apr 09, 09:10:45 I think a Chow Chow is a lil' to big fr a condominium. Dogs easier to keep in APT's, the best are toy breeds like pug, pom, papillion, chihuahua etc..... Dogs that don't require alot of space and can squeeze in and bought in a hotel without letting anyone know... but I live in an apt bt i cn't keep one cuz my apt doesn't allow dogs.... If i were, i'd keep a pom.....But if u want a large breed, newfoundlands and great danes are aceptable cuz they are more or less couch potatoes....

My staffordshire bull terrier used to shake and then suddenly attack for no reason. I put up with him attacking several times until he ripped part of my bicep out and put me in hospital for 3 days.

My dog, Happy is the most friendly dog too. He loves people and love the attention. Confusing!!

This is a little complicated. The first step is to get a vet check done. Get the blood work done and have her thyroid checked. Good luck.
