Unfortunately, and ... By: wrdeboise. on 15 Jul 10, 03:05:53 Unfortunately, and like you said, this method is a slow resource hog for massive lists. I've been experimenting with linked lists and recursive data types to lighten the load for really large lists of things. But most of the time my arrays are short enough not to worry about memory inefficiency. However, if already have a linked list class ready to go, I mine as well use it.

The "j=j-1" is so ... By: AComputerScientist. on 21 Oct 09, 14:08:46 The "j=j-1" is so the loop doesn't go on infinitely. If the condition is met, then you swap elements j and j-1, then go on with the next lower index, which is j-1 (so in the next loop iteration, you'll be comparing elements j-1 and j-2, and so on).
Array indices ... By: AComputerScientist. on 21 Oct 09, 14:06:29 Array indices sometimes range from 0 to n-1 (for size n arrays; not from 1 to n), and this is the convention here. So the loop only goes till n-1. It does not start with i=0 but from i=1, because in the first loop there would be nothing to do (the first element is always in the right relative order with itself)

It's amazing that the cube is still around, my son has one and I noticed what a piece of crap it is compared to the original. If your really into this puzzle try to get your hands on one of the originals and you'll be amazed how easy it turns. No rubbing corners. no sticking, just smooth action.

Though I'm curious, would it be faster to have both finish and start path find towards each other, and if the start path finder hits a space that any of the finish path finder has, then the path is found... Or perhaps that would take more code, and result in the same level of efficiency :|
idk... I should try it :)
@TheReasonWhyGuy ... By: RJLeffmann. on 29 Jul 10, 00:21:10 @TheReasonWhyGuy Yes very simple. The recursive function that traverses the maze is only 10 or so lines of code, and it pretty much works like you said.
I would assume this ... By: TheReasonWhyGuy. on 28 Jul 10, 23:41:03 I would assume this to be a simple program, since all it should need to do is, record the position and possible choices at each intersection, and explore each option... usually I would assume with a bias... like clockwise from up... and once it reaches the end of the possibility tree, it goes back to a previous decision, and increases the value...so assuming that 0 is up, 1 is right, down is 2 and left is 3... and ignoring reverse directions, and non-choices, it would narrow the possibilities

Conradhw: Maze algorithms and dungeon generators are two very different things. Maze algorithms solve mazes, usually obtaining the shortest route if more than one is available.
The workings of the algorithm have been visualised for you here, but the algorithm itself is unaware of any graphics. All it cares about is the data involved. It therefore makes no sense to make graphical demands of the algorithm itself.
C/C++ has no ... By: RJLeffmann. on 29 Jan 10, 13:06:56 C/C++ has no support for graphics, so you have to make use of an existing graphics library, or use whatever graphics support you have in the operating system you're on. For doing graphics on Windows and OS X you can find information on MSDN and Apple Developer Center.
In this case it was just a console application (a run/command box) and I generated each image frame in memory and wrote it to disk in the BMP format, batch loaded all frames into VirtualDub and saved back as an AVI animation.

Surely theres a faster way to do it?
By: wrdeboise. on 15 Jul 10, 03:05:53
Unfortunately, and like you said, this method is a slow resource hog for massive lists. I've been experimenting with linked lists and recursive data types to lighten the load for really large lists of things. But most of the time my arrays are short enough not to worry about memory inefficiency. However, if already have a linked list class ready to go, I mine as well use it.

yeah i was just writing it on MIPS languaye for a college proyect and just noticed the flaw as i typed it. still dificul to implement a good swap as im working using a Singly-linked list. i whould really find interesting to watch an animation about pointers, nodes and list.
