I think the reason people think the experiment is "wrong" is because it plays with the subject's feelings. Sure, no one is getting physically hurt, but it's the deceit the subjects are put through that I think people object to. They really do believe that they're administering shocks, after all.

That would've been a TRUE experiment on the persuasive powers of authority. In this case the authority was simply the pretension of someone with lots of knowledge. It's slightly different from authority. The subjects were never under direct threat or fear. Had that been there, the results would've been 100% negative.

@HowToGetFreebies The issue is one of ethics. The participants are deceived into believing it is about learning, when in fact it is about obeying authority. So that is not 'informed' consent, which is considered by many as unethical. Secondly, even though the participants discover that it is all acting, it does have lasting harm on participants, which is also unethical. Participants realise they can be weak and coerced into hurting completely innocent people. Doesn't matter it was acting.

This is absolutely chilling for me; it makes me feel heartsick and very disturbed. It reminds me of my childhood and the church I went to; they intimidated me to believe and act as they said in pretty much the exact same way the conductor of the experiment did, pretending compassion and understanding in order to better manipulate me into obeying their orders. This experiment was about obedience and authority, and the situation that one is in. Why is not acceptable to murder someone in private life, but then when the government tells you to murder in a war it is acceptable to murder then? Why do we obey society? Why do we walk on crosswalks? Why do we line up at the bank when a sign tells us to do so? Because humans are programmed now to obey authority.
